Whether you knew it or not, if you were ticketed in Irving while driving with an invalid or suspended license, you will be facing one of the most serious traffic violations to be issued. When I say that you may not have known about the ticket, I mean that often times a person’s license becomes invalid or suspended that person did not even know about it. There are many reasons for a person’s license to be invalidated but the consequence of driving without a valid license is always the same, you committed a crime. It is not an intent based crime, meaning you do not have to know that your license was bad when it happened. Either it was invalid or not. No excuses.

The punishment for a Class C Misdemeanor Driving While License Invalid (DWLI) or Driving While License Suspended (DWLS) is punishment by fine only. However, the punishment extends to your ability to get your license eligible again. Why? Well, if you receive a conviction for DWLI or DWLS on your driving record, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) may seek to suspend your license for up to two years. That means that even if you rectify the problems with your license, you would still not be able to drive during that suspension period.
The goal is the prevent the conviction from appearing on your record, after all, you can’t go back and change the ticket. In Irving, to accomplish that, you will need to renew your license to an “eligible” status. That means, you will have to bring your surcharges current, lift any outstanding tickets, pay any holds on your license, obtain and file SR-22 insurance (if required), or complete any courses (e.g., drug classes, alcohol awareness classes) before DPS will reinstate your license to normal status. Trust me on this one, you will need an attorney to accomplish this.
